Frankmusik

Words by Leah Simpson

Do we really need another Mika? Apparently so. Make way for the 22-year-old Croydon-born Frankmusik. Vincent Frank is the latest bedroom-based wonder to pick up where Daniel Bedingfield left off - and he’s here to offer us nothing short of radio-friendly, 80s-edged masterpieces.

The man with many talents - including graphic design, photography and video directing - had some difficulty choosing between which of the arts to pursue, but after a year studying fashion at Central Saint Martins, he decided to drop out and embark on a career in music. And what a blessing on our ears that he did.

The former beat-boxer is getting a reputation for his well-constructed and lucid prose - his beats however, are anything but. Are we bothered? Are we fuck. Heavily influenced by the avant-garde crowd of the 80s, this self-taught multi-instrumentalist has already earned himself something of a name in the industry, and Mr. Musik is responsible for pricking up the ears of an important few while remixing tunes from the likes of Radiohead and Keane, the latter of whom asked him to join them on their recent Perfect Symmetry tour.

Of course, he isn’t new to the scene at all. Before the release of this year’s album ‘Complete Me,’ he had already toured with the likes of Sam Sparro and Alphabeat. And we won’t hold it against you if you aren’t familiar with ‘Frankisium’ and ‘Three Little Words,’ previous releases on his own label Apparent, circa 2007.

But with hook-heavy electro-pop tunes that would sound out of place neither on Radio 1 nor soundtracking a night out in a dirty East London club, Frankmusik is, quite frankly (no pun intended), about to explode. Don’t let the prim and proper shirt and huge frames fool you – 2009 is going to be his year.
