Words by Sarah Baldwin
Infectious pop hooks. Soulful, velvety vocals. Funky foot-tapping beats. Aggressive and fresh and impossible not to dance to. The love child of a kinky orgy between Kelis, Morrissey, M.I.A and Slow Club. ‘Dark, bleak, but colourful pop music’. This is pure pop magic. And in case you hadn’t noticed, pop is back. Cooler than a hypothermic bikini model in Norway.
But this is Madonna pop not Vengaboys or Aqua. Catchy, upbeat and funky pop, rather than cheesy dross. ‘Out of the back end of the 90s we had teeny-bopper pop music like S Club 7 and Britney. Pop was incredibly shit basically, I think that people forgot what pop music originally was. That’s where I came from - I just thought, I love pop music and people like Kate Bush and Bjork and David Bowie, so I just wanted to do that.’
Whilst being poptastic, there’s also something under-stated and intimate about Anita’s electronics. She writes dark poetry and sad laments, then confidently shakes it up with her sublime vocals. ‘You’ve got to make people feel something. I just think adversity is what you need. I think people make the best sort of art from feeling really down about things.’
Thecocknbullkid is certainly one of the most exciting things to come out of London in years. Anita is independent, ambitious, and straight out of the creative Eastside. Writing and producing all her own stuff, she’s a bloody talented young girl. But for all her precocity, surprisingly down to earth, honest and unpretentious. This girl wants to go global, but she wants to do it without sacrificing her integrity. ‘I think it’s less about being really famous. I want to be successful and I want people to understand it and to like it. And even for people to hate it.’
But people don’t hate it. Anita is more lovable than Raymond. On top of that she’s got balls. ‘I don’t like artists that are just too scared of doing anything that’s remotely interesting because they think no one is going to buy it’, she rants. ‘I don’t know if that matters anymore considering the current economic climate- I think that if anything this is the time to release anything.’ There you have it – music for the credit crunch. Fuck multi-billion pound bail-outs, Thecockandbullkid is in town.
