Florence and the Machine - Lungs

Florence and the Machine - Lungs

Words by Sarah Brading

A highly recommended, raw and perfectly formed debut album, suitably named ‘Lungs’ due to Ms Welch’s exceptionally strong voice.

Lyrics as unpredictable and imaginative as Florence Welch’s self styled exterior. Starting and beginning with two uplifting tracks. ‘Dog Days Are Over’ is a catchy and whimsical song only enhanced by the glowing video available on U-Tube. ‘You’ve Got the Love’ cover, originally by The Source/ Candi Staton, once thought to be a MySpace treat is now a prominent album track, which magnificently creates the strong and elated feeling associated with the original 1991 track.

Each song elevates and throws the listener into the realms of Florence’s imagination and emotions. With lyrics such as ‘I love you so much I’m going to let you kill me’, an example of lyrics Florence reportedly wrote whilst heartbroken.

An album so delicately put together it feels uniquely personal to the listener, each song creating a spiralling feeling of euphoria and discovery. This is a painstakingly fierce look into a young woman’s struggle and achievement with love and life and all that’s in between.
