Now, Now Every Children: Live

Words by Camille Darroux

Sometimes a song takes several listens before it starts growing on you. Sometimes, however, the music somehow manages to find its way to the deepest part of your heart instantaneously. This is what happened to me when I first heard “In my Chest” by a band based in Minneapolis and called Now, Now Every Children. As the opening line was sung, I knew I had found my next musical obsession. “I have it all figured out in my head, you have buried a hole in my chest” was coming out of my speakers, and the words were delivered in the most fragile, honest voice, before the drums and the guitars erupted into the song, accompanying the vocals’ beauty and sensibility perfectly. Surprisingly enough, their other songs were just as good, and it quickly became impossible to pick a favourite from their debut album entitled “Cars”, which was released earlier this year.

I had the chance to meet the band as they were starting a huge European tour and sat down with them for a chat before they delivered a mind-blowing live performance to a quickly conquered audience. Brad (drums) and Cacie (vocals, guitar) met in high school in 2002 and started making music after writing “that one song” that made them realize they could make music together. “We kind of wish it hadn’t happened, though”, as Cacie states it. Both of them display a very powerful creative synergy that clearly shows through while observing them. Now, Now Every Children took their name from a typo Cacie made while writing a myspace message: apparently the best things happen by accident, and this was no exception to the rule.

Those self-confessed “suckers for cheesy pop songs” told me they currently have a soft spot for Britney Spears’ music, and when asked which bands or artists made them want to start making music, they simply answered “everyone who plays music and does gigs, really”.  Many bands do inspire them, but they most definitely aren’t trying to copy anyone. Brad said he looks up to Sufjan Stevens, while Cacie warmly recommended listening to Anni Rossi. Fellow Minneapolis bands One For The Team and Best Friends Forever also are on the list of their current favourite artists, along with Dear & the Headlights and Say Hi. Brad and Cacie don’t really seem to care about the hype and only remain true to themselves, following their minds and hearts at all times. As talented, true-hearted and one of a kind as they are, they clearly possess everything it takes to become indie hit-machines. Watch this space.
