Wave Machines - I Go I Go I Go
Words by Gemma Hughes
Far from being the scary domain of dive-bombing and heavy petting hard kids, Wave Machines the band (as opposed to their swimming pool namesake) are for just about everyone.
This beardy, bleepy four-piece make universal and accessible electro-pop with hooks catchy enough to make Hot Chip jealous, and the soon to be re-released single ‘I Go I Go I Go’ has sing-along summer hit written all over it.
With casio keyboards, disco drums and art school credentials, it’s inevitable that the band will attract comparisons to the aforementioned Hot Chip, but Wave Machines have a Poundland Pop sound all of their own.
This three minute wonder begins with a flurry of drum machine and cowbell action before the keyboard really kicks in, and the vintage vibe continues thanks to the melody and synth sounds bearing more than a passing resemblance to 1984 pop classic, ‘Let’s Hear it For The Boy’.
Tim Bruzon’s Beck-style falsetto lyrics fit perfectly over the top, but it’s this, combined with the budget sound that give the track more than a bit of a Flight of The Concords feel. Two minutes in there’s even an acoustic guitar and handclap breakdown that sounds remarkably like the Concords theme tune itself. But somehow, even though it sounds a bit like a parody of itself, this song still sounds bloody brilliant and I just cannot get the chorus out of my head.
The bar is set pretty high for the ‘I Go I Go I Go’ June 8th release; when put out on a limited run last year, it sold out before the records even hit the stores thanks to being play listed by the likes of Radio 1, Radio 6 and Xfm. But will it do so well the second time around? We think so. The BBC’s first lady of cool, Ms Annie Mac is already plugging it and this really is one of those songs that sounds even better in the sun.
The album, ‘Wave If You’re Really There’ follows shortly after the single, with a release date of 22nd June, and the band have a schedule jam packed with gigs and festivals for the next few months. Check out http://www.myspace.com/mywavemachine for more details.
